Cleaning and maintaining sheep and goat collars
Taking care of your sheep and goat collars helps ensure reliable performance season after season. A light cleaning now and then, especially if the solar panel gets dirty, keeps everything working at its best.
Move the collars in the app to "no pasture".
Remove the battery from the collar. (This is important to avoid unnecessary invoicing when the collars are not in use.)
Clean the collars and batteries in lukewarm water, using a nylon brush such as a toothbrush. Do not use chlorine as this can damage the solar panels. If you wish to use a disinfecting agent, we recommend Virkon S. Allow all parts to dry before storage.
Remove any dust, mud, or fur on the battery poles, using a cotton bud if needed.
Charge the batteries; they are to be stored fully charged to ensure maximum performance and durability.
The collars and batteries should be stored in a dry and clean place at room temperature.
If you have not cleaned off the battery and the collar at the end of last season, we recommend you do so.
Make sure there is no dust or mud on the battery poles.
Apply Vaseline at the bottom of the battery poles. Vaseline should only be applied to the poles on each side of the battery (+ and −), not the middle one.
Make sure you have a fully charged battery. If you have not charged it before storage, it's important to do so before inserting it into the collar to start the season.
Insert the battery. There should be a startup sound to indicate that the collar is receiving power.
Check the app to make sure the collar is reporting before taking the collar to pasture. We also recommend making sure the collar is in an area of good connectivity before loading the first pasture of the season.
The collar is now ready to be used.
Make sure the collar won't emit a pulse while you are handling it.
Remove the battery from the collar. Press the black buttons on both sides at the same time to release it. You may need to apply firm pressure. If the battery is difficult to remove, pump pliers can be used carefully to help release it.
Inspect the collar battery compartment and remove any build-up, such as dirt or fur. Wipe it gently with a dry or slightly damp cloth and let it dry before inserting a new battery.
Insert a charged battery and make sure it clicks securely into place. The collar plays the startup sound when a charged battery is inserted.
Clean the removed battery with a damp cloth or a soft nylon brush, such as a toothbrush or washing-up brush. Check that there is no dust, mud, or fur on the battery poles. Clean the poles with a cotton bud if needed before storage or charging.
