Battery breakthrough for the upcoming season

HerdNet made connectivity a team effort, with one connected collar keeping the entire herd online. Now we're using the same principle to deliver a significant leap in battery life.

Here's what changed, why now, and what it means for your operation.

How it works

HerdNet was originally built to keep collars connected in areas with poor signal, by letting collars communicate directly with each other and share connectivity across the herd.

That local network is now doing something more. Server communication is one of the biggest draws on collar battery. Because the herd maintains connectivity collectively, individual collars no longer need to check in as frequently, and each collar uses dramatically less energy as a result.

For most grazing situations you won't notice any difference. If an animal separates from the herd, the collar recognises this automatically and switches to individual updates every 15 minutes. And if an animal leaves the pasture entirely, update frequency increases automatically to keep you informed.

The season is starting

We've been working towards this for a while. Getting it right before the season mattered more than getting it out fast, and real-world testing across markets and conditions gave us the confidence to stand behind it.

HerdNet made it technically possible. Rigorous testing made us certain. If battery life has ever been a question mark for your operation, this is the update you've been waiting for.

Who gets the update

All 2.5 collars receive this update automatically. For cattle, we're confident in full-season battery life across all markets. For areas with limited sun or poor connectivity, battery life may still vary.

For sheep and goat, early testing results look great. We'll share more as the season gets underway and confidence grows.

To help you stay on top of things, we recently launched battery life estimation in the app. You'll see how long the battery for each collar is expected to last based on current usage, charging status, and conditions, especially useful if you're grazing in areas with limited sun or connectivity.
