How to move livestock with virtual fencing | Nofence

Moving livestock

Moving livestock

Nofence gives you two ways to move your livestock: transporting them to a completely new location, or moving them to a fresh area within an existing pasture. Both can be done from your phone, wherever you are.

Moving livestock to a new location

After rounding up your herd for transport, you can assign them to a new pasture before you set off. Select the livestock in the app and press "Move." Within two minutes, your current pasture will disable and the new pasture will enter a waiting state. It will activate automatically as soon as the livestock are detected inside the new pasture zone.

Tip: Herding towards the gate or chute before moving day

If you're planning to move or process a large herd, you can use the virtual boundary to gradually herd livestock towards the gate or chute in the days leading up to the move. A quick boundary adjustment twice a day in the app can save hours of locating and rounding up cattle on the day itself.

Moving livestock around the pasture

You don't always need to move your herd to a new location. If fresh grazing is available nearby, you can extend the existing pasture boundary to include the new area. Once the livestock discover the change and move through, simply close the boundary behind them. You can monitor the whole process and make boundary adjustments from the app, without needing to be on-site.

Moving livestock around the pasture

A you can move livestock around a pasture by simply extending the existing pasture to the new ungrazed area. Once the livestock discovers the boundary change and moves to the greener pasture you can simply close the pasture behind the herd. The best part of this method is that you don't even need to be there, you can watch the livestock move and herd the livestock from the app virtually. With them always being contained by virtual fencing.

Managed grazing

For producers looking to get more out of their land through rotational or managed grazing, Nofence removes much of the manual work involved. Moving polywire fences consistently throughout a busy season is time-consuming and difficult to keep up with. With Nofence, you can move your livestock to the next grazing section in minutes from wherever you are. The herd responds quickly to boundary changes and moves to the fresh pasture without any need for manual herding. Once they've moved through, close the boundary behind them in the app.

Tip: Bale grazing

Many Nofence producers who use bale grazing recommend laying out rows of bales and then extending the virtual boundary periodically to give access to an additional row. This means you can manage access to bales on your own schedule, directly from the app.

Bale Grazing

With Nofence you can set up hay bales less often with virtual fencing. Many Nofence users have recommended laying out rows of bales and then extending the boundary periodically to cover an additional row of hay bales. This means you can give access to bales on your terms wherever you are directly from the app.

Strip grazing

Strip grazing is one of the most effective ways to improve pasture utilisation, but it can be labour-intensive with traditional fencing. With Nofence, you can manage your grazing strips from your phone. When the herd has grazed down a strip, they will naturally start testing the virtual boundary more frequently. You'll receive a notification when this activity increases, giving you the opportunity to move the boundary before any animal receives a pulse. Move the strip from the app, and the herd will follow.
